I compose to connect. Music reflects who we are or hope to be and creates an understanding—an empathy between us.

Every rhythm, every note, every aspect of my music is created with this desire to create connection between us, and to communicate those emotions that cannot be articulated with words.

In the spring of 2024, Toledo [was] in the direct viewing path of a total solar eclipse. To celebrate this phenomenon, the Toledo Symphony has commissioned ADJ•ective New Music to compose a suite of new planets.

Cynthia Van Maanen is a composer, educator, and flautist.

Her compositions have been performed by members of the Houston Ballet Orchestra, Houston Opera Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Traverse Symphony Orchestra, as well as many collegiate faculty members and students from around the country. She is also the composer of the Traverse City Film Festivals’ opening fanfare.
